Cyber Essentials is a certification scheme overseen by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and delivered through IASME. There are two levels. Cyber Essentials is a verified self-assessment reviewed by a qualified assessor. Cyber Essentials Plus covers the same controls but adds an independent technical audit of your live systems. Both certificates last 12 months.

• Firewalls — properly configured boundary and device firewalls, with default passwords changed.
• Secure configuration — devices hardened before use, unused accounts and features removed.
• Security update management — everything patched, with high/critical fixes applied within 14 days.
• User access control — least-privilege access and MFA on all cloud services.
• Malware protection — active, up-to-date anti-malware or EDR on every device.

What it costs and how long it takes

IASME sets the basic fee centrally, banded by headcount: from around £320+VAT for a micro business up to about £600+VAT for larger organisations. Cyber Essentials Plus starts from roughly £1,400+VAT because of the technical audit. On top of the fee, budget for any remediation — usually modest if you already have managed IT. Most Manchester SMEs certify within a few weeks.

The free £25,000 cyber insurance

If your organisation turns over under £20 million and you certify your whole organisation to basic Cyber Essentials, you automatically get £25,000 of cyber liability insurance and an incident-response helpline at no extra cost — often worth more than the certification fee itself.
