Managed desktop services look after the user devices covered by your agreement, such as laptops and desktop PCs. They can combine setup, maintenance and support, but do not automatically include replacement hardware or every application.

Typical service components

  • Approved device configuration and enrolment.
  • Operating-system and supported application maintenance.
  • Security settings and endpoint tools within scope.
  • Remote helpdesk and troubleshooting.
  • Account and access coordination for starters and leavers.
  • Device inventory, health checks and lifecycle planning.

Follow the device through its lifecycle

A good service starts before delivery: selecting an approved specification and preparing access. During use, it maintains the device and helps the employee. At the end, it removes access and manages return or disposal through an agreed process.

Define how personal devices, shared terminals and home-working equipment are treated. They may need different policies and support boundaries.

Is hardware included in the monthly fee

Not necessarily. Support may be separate from purchase, leasing, warranty and replacement. Ask who supplies spare equipment and whether a failed device qualifies for an agreed replacement process.

Does desktop management include data backup

Only if explicitly covered. Identify where staff save business information and what recovery arrangements protect it. Device management does not automatically protect every local file.

Next step: ask your provider to describe the complete journey from ordering a laptop to securely retiring it.
