How MSPs manage software updates and security patches

Managed patching is a controlled process for identifying, deploying and checking software updates. It should cover agreed systems and make failures or exceptions visible, rather than simply turning automatic updates on.
A useful patching workflow
- Inventory supported operating systems and applications.
- Assess updates against risk and business dependencies.
- Test or stage changes where appropriate.
- Deploy within agreed maintenance windows.
- Coordinate necessary restarts.
- Verify installation and investigate failed deployments.
- Record exceptions and the plan to address them.
Balance urgency and disruption
Some vulnerabilities call for rapid action; routine feature changes may allow more planning. Agree how the provider makes that decision and when business approval is needed.
Laptops that remain switched off, specialist applications and unsupported systems can create gaps. These should appear in reports with named owners, not disappear from the denominator.
Are third-party applications included
Only where the service and tooling cover them. Ask about browsers, PDF tools, accounting applications and server software. A report about operating-system updates does not prove every application is maintained.
Does successful installation prove a system is secure
No. Patching is one control alongside configuration, access protection and detection. Verify that the device still works and that exceptions are addressed.
Next step: ask for patch coverage, deployment results and outstanding exceptions for your actual environment.
