Managed IT

Are managed services the same as IT outsourcing

Managed services are a form of outsourcing, but outsourcing does not always mean managed services. Outsourcing describes who performs the work. Managed services describe an ongoing arrangement to look after defined systems or services.

Three common arrangements

  • Project outsourcing: a supplier completes a specific task, such as a migration.
  • Break-fix support: you call for help when a fault occurs and pay for the work.
  • Managed services: a provider takes ongoing responsibility for an agreed scope, usually for a recurring fee.

The distinction affects what happens between incidents. A managed agreement can include routine checks, updates and reporting. A one-off outsourcing contract may end as soon as the project is delivered.

Why the wording matters

Imagine two suppliers both offering “outsourced IT”. One only answers support calls; the other maintains devices and reviews recurring problems. Their labels may match, but their responsibilities do not.

For UK businesses, the practical question is whether the agreement defines the service, coverage, reporting, security duties and exit process. Do not infer these from a package name.

Does outsourcing mean losing control

No. You can delegate technical tasks while retaining ownership of accounts, budgets and business decisions. Name an internal service owner and require approval for significant changes.

Next step: ask the supplier to explain which ongoing tasks happen without your staff raising a ticket.
