What happens if your MSP goes out of business

If your MSP closes, support may stop and access to supplier-controlled tools or subscriptions may become difficult. Your recovery options depend on account ownership, documentation and the services supplied through that provider.

Prepare while the service is healthy

  • Register domains and key business accounts to your organisation.
  • Maintain emergency administrator access with appropriate controls.
  • Keep a current inventory and useful system documentation.
  • Record licence suppliers, renewal dates and billing arrangements.
  • Understand where backups are held and how restoration is authorised.
  • Agree export and transition assistance in the contract.

These steps also help with ordinary provider changes. They should be reviewed periodically rather than filed away once.

If closure actually happens

Appoint an internal lead, identify essential systems and contact the relevant platform suppliers. Arrange temporary support, secure privileged access and establish which subscriptions or tools need replacing. Do not make widespread changes until dependencies are understood.

Have your legal or procurement adviser review contractual rights and any insolvency communications. Technical access and commercial rights are separate issues; owning data does not automatically give immediate access to every system.

Will cloud services keep working

Possibly, but it depends on their billing, ownership and reseller arrangements. Check each subscription rather than assuming all services continue unchanged.

Next step: run a tabletop exercise asking how you would operate for a week without access to your MSP.
