What services do managed service providers offer

Managed service providers can offer helpdesk support, device management, network administration, cloud support, cybersecurity and backup services. These are possible services, not a standard bundle that every MSP includes.
The main service areas
- User support: troubleshooting, password and account help, onboarding and leavers.
- Managed desktops: device configuration, approved software and maintenance.
- Infrastructure: servers, Wi-Fi, firewalls and connectivity coordination.
- Cloud management: Microsoft 365 or other platforms, access and configuration.
- Security: endpoint controls, alert handling and agreed response services.
- Backup and recovery: protecting specified data and testing restoration.
- IT planning: lifecycle budgets, capacity reviews and technology roadmaps.
Distinguish management from ownership
An MSP might manage your firewall without supplying it, or administer Microsoft 365 while licences are billed separately. It might monitor backups without storing them. Ask who supplies each tool and who responds when it fails.
Projects such as office moves, cloud migrations and major upgrades often sit outside the recurring fee. On-site support, specialist applications and out-of-hours assistance may also have separate charges.
Does an MSP support every application
Not automatically. Some will help investigate an application issue but rely on its software vendor for a fix. Name your accounting, CRM and industry applications in the proposal and agree the handover process.
Next step: request a service schedule that lists every included system, the work covered and the supplier responsible for escalation.
